A large area of prehistoric settlement activity has been identified at Kilmainham south-west of Kells (Section 4).

The road to the west of the sites runs south-east / north-west to Kells town from Banestown. A ringfort depicted as an earthen enclosure is indicated in the upper right-hand corner of the image and identified as RMP site ME017-020. A small group of postholes, some of which contained struck flint, may represent a Neolithic or Bronze Age building at Kilmainham 2. Bronze age activity was revealed by pottery from shallow pits, a burnt mound and possible cremations at Kilmainham 1.
