A large area of prehistoric settlement activity has been identified at Kilmainham south-west of Kells (Section 4).

A small group of postholes, some of which contained struck flint, may represent a Neolithic or Bronze Age building at Kilmainham 2. Bronze age activity was revealed by pottery from shallow pits, a burnt mound and possible cremations at Kilmainham 1.
